Institute of Directors (IoD) Certificate in Company Direction


This executive programme is designed by directors for directors and focus on the essential skills 'directors' need to lead, drive and transform their business.

The programme will provide you with a robust and up to date set of strategic thinking models, frameworks and tools that you can directly apply to enhance your organisation's performance. CIIM and IoD will also help you to develop your own personal roadmap to enable you to drive strategic initiatives and inspire your people to follow.

The IoD Certificate in Company Direction will guide participants through ten days of in-depth learning in the following disciplines:

Trainer Bio

Paul is an experienced commercial law barrister and chartered director. Over the last ten years Paul has served as general counsel of the Business Link operation in London. During this time Paul has advised on a wide range of complex and politically sensitive commercial law issues, working with senior leaders in government and the civil service. Throughout his career Paul has championed the improvement of corporate governance standards in businesses and governmental organisations across London. Paul also served as non-executive chairman of a Bafta award winning educational software house.

Paul is a member of the Legal Services Board (Consumer Panel), the body responsible for ensuring ongoing reform in legal services in the UK and is chairman of the National Youth Music Theatre, a leading national charity for the arts. In previous assignments Paul has served on the Board of Mid Essex Primary Care Trust and represented the trust on the North Essex Cluster Primary Care Trust board responsible for commissioning £1.5bn of healthcare services annually and has acted as special adviser to the board of the General Teaching Council for England.

Paul is currently a lead tutor at the Institute of Directors with responsibility for designing the Institute’s governance courses and has responsibly for the chartered director governance syllabus. Paul has led chartered director courses within the UK, throughout the Middle East and many other jurisdictions across the world.

In his role at the Institute of Directors, Paul has worked with the boards of some of the UK’s leading companies, among others, directors at Royal Dutch Shell, Fed Ex UK, BMT Group and John Laing. In the public sector Paul has worked with officers at the highest levels of the Ministry of Defence, the National Health Service, the Police and the Department of International Development. Internationally Paul has led courses for, among others, directors at the Islamic Development Bank, First Atlantic Bank Ghana, CRDB Bank Tanzania, Capital G Bank Bermuda, ACWA Power Saudi Arabia and The National Lottery Authority Ghana.

Trainer Bio

Murray Eldridge is a Chartered Director and has been a member of the IoD for over 12 years. He has forty years of international experience in Shipping, Oil & Gas, Telecoms, Consulting and Water. A board level operator for the last 20 years he has held Marketing & Sales, Strategy, Commercial, Managing Director and Non-Executive roles with companies such as Smit International, Cable & Wireless and Global Crossing. Murray also has extensive experience in setting up and managing international joint ventures and alliances in the UK, China, Japan and Indonesia. As a consultant he has worked with Philips, Coca Cola, T-Mobile and Alcatel among others and has also undertaken FTSE company board evaluations under the UK Corporate Governance Code. Murray’s involvement with companies encompasses absolute start-ups through to blue chip, global market leaders. His experience also includes working through three major sector crashes in three different industries.

Murray is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and holds an MBA. He also received the prestigious Magnolia Award for his work in China – only the second British businessman to receive the award at the time.

In his capacity as course leader Murray has worked with organisations that include, Costain, Wessex Water, Alstom, KBR and UKAS among others. His broad and deep involvement in a number of different industries, combined with his current water company activity, ensure he brings interesting and current perspectives to the IoD courses he facilitates.

Trainer Bio

David Joel is a Chartered Director and has been facilitating, delivering and mentoring at senior management and director level for the last ten years in both the public (specifically the MoD and the NHS) and private sectors.

Before beginning to work with the Institute of Directors, David spent fifteen years in the defence and aerospace sector with companies such as GEC Marconi, Serco and Lockheed Martin. David was a member of the board of Serco Defence Ltd and the Managing Director of one of its technology based subsidiaries. In this role David was instrumental in the development of business strategy and major change implementation. He was also actively involved with the acquisition of a technology company and the securing of high value public sector contracts for the Serco group of companies.

David is currently a non-executive director on the board of the Hampshire Chambers of Commerce and the board of Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Queen Alexandra Hospital council of governors.

David is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and a qualified physicist and trainer. David has been a member of the IoD for over twelve years and a course leader for five.

In his course leader capacity with the IoD David has worked with organisations such as the MoD, Office Depot, Mainetti, Cassidian, Commerzbank, Skanska, Travis Perkins, First Group and the NHS.


Programme Fee: €6,000

Due to CIIM's non-profit status, no VAT is charged. Fees include tuition, educational material, coffee breaks, refreshments and lunch.
